Lucke!!
Vielleicht hilft dies dir ja was!
1. go to carti, a quiet big san blas (kuna yala) island. end station for most of the cargo ships, some go until colon though. to get there take a jeep from panama city to the caribbean coast - where to get them - i don't know! did it the other way round!
2. ask around the island for the cargueros (Cargo ships)... wait 1 week:)), if you're lucky only one day... don't trust in mañana or ahorita, they probably never leave when they tell you. I had to wait 2 days, which was not that bad. others waited 1 week. negotiate the price, be hard - tell them you knwo people who paid only 35dollars, common price is 50 though. if you pay more then they probably rip you off.
3. get off the boat in puerto obaldia, the last panamian town just before the colombian border.
4. get a lancha to capurgana. 10 dollars.
5. SPEND SOME TIME IN CAPURGANA!!!! reeeally nice and relaxed caribbean town!!! go to szapzurro too, visit la miel - a beach which is already in Panama, but you can walk over the border from szapzurro and you only need to show your passport, but you won't get a stamp or something.
6. Get a boat from capurgana to turbo. 25 dollars.
7. From Turbo you can take buses/jeeps whatever to medellin or cartagena.
It took 3nights/4days, met people whose ship was slower, like 5days.
what to take: fruits!! maybe hammocks - you have to sleep on the floor, we didn't even have hammocks, so we slept on the pier on concrete. maybe there's space to hang up your hammock on the ship.patience!!! the trip will take you longer than they want to make you believe. good humor, and wishes to talk to the crew. nice guys!!!!
you should definitely do it! really nice, you get to see some special places! not the picture-perfect white beaches though, only the populated islands, but this is nice enough really!
lonely planet says not to take a cargo ship, because they might smuggle drugs. did'nt know that before (wouldn't have mattered, really:)), but look at the ship carefully before travelling with them. our captain was really good! ppanama-colombia is a different thing though, not a lot of drugs making that direction i guess...
Gute reise....
